how can i be a safe driver and a racer at the same time?
so here’s my problem guys. since i was a kid, i have dreamed of being a racer. so i got my license two years ago. i graduated from a driving school. but the problem is, even in the neighborhood, i drive fast. my neighbors gets mad. but im only doing it coz of the rage i feel inside. i like going to corners fast. i drive my dad’s hyundai getz 1.1 gl. i know going into racing school is kinda expensive and i dont have the money. we are only a poor family in the philippines. but i want to be racer, not just in the circuits, but in mountain passes as well. (but then again, i dont have the money. i cant even afford a track day nor the gas for the car). im also the kind of person who likes to corner fast. (yeah i use the early apex in our subdivision. bad for my neighbors).
please, i need an advice. for those who will give negative insights like insults, please dont post.
Being a safe driver and being a racer are not incompatible… in fact, most successful track drivers are often safer on the street as the skills that lead to one being fast (driving smoothly with balance and excellent perception) also help in handling the unexpected. However, the way one drives at the track is not the way one drives on the street!
So first off, you need to learn to be reasonable when driving on public roads. They are not race tracks! Even if you are just completely selfish and unwilling to think of the danger you are subjecting others too by driving that way… and even IF you happened to already have the skills of being a great driver, the fact is public roads are unpredictable. And unlike a race track, the other drivers are not racing. So, if you are driving at or near the limit on public roads, you will have an accident. If you cannot afford a track day can you afford a wrecked car? Serious injury? Worse? Racing in a controlled environment like a staged rally or a road course is dangerous; racing on the street is way beyond dangerous!
So what do you do aside from getting a grip on how you drive? First off, start checking out some driving books because if you are driving an early apex you are not driving fast (there are very very few corners where you would want to drive an early apex, and they usually involve higher speeds that you’d be able to get to in your subdivision): Going Faster by Skip Barber is a great starting point.
Next, if you can’t afford a track day or driving school, then start saving! And look at lower cost options like go-karting. Though any racing will ultimate be fairly costly – and unfortunately there is not any magic suggestion that will make it cheaper.
