As our culture moves away from the auto-centric style of living that influenced the way our cities were previously designed, we see more and more towns and cities being created with an emphasis on the people who live in them. Areas that were designed with cars in mind tend to be sprawling, with wide streets for lots of cars, no easy pedestrian access, and shopping areas far from residential areas.
More and more with city and town planning, we are seeing a shift away from auto-centric planning towards a more resident focused plan. Calgary has adopted a long term plan for the city to make future development greener and more user friendly. Plan It Calgary is a project with both the city of Calgary and thousands of its residents to better expand on the city’s neighbourhoods and transportation networks over the next 50 years.
The Plan takes into account many of the same principles that you find in New Urbanism developments such as mixed-use neighbourhoods that incorporate different types of housing and businesses that allow residents with a variety of housing needs to live in areas that also have amenities within walkable distances. Plan It Calgary also incorporates nearby useable green spaces and improved public transit to downscale the use of cars in the new neighbourhoods.
For residents living in established neighbourhoods or prospective buyers looking to buy into older character homes in Calgary, rest assured that the older neighbourhoods will experience little change. The majority of the plans pertain to new developments in the city so that the likelihood of urban sprawl is minimized; urban sprawl can be detrimental to the ecosystem surrounding the city, especially in a natural wonderland like Calgary.
The Plan It Calgary project makes a lot of sense for our needs and concerns in modern day housing. With the growing trend in North America of obesity in both adults and children, it is vital for neighbourhoods to be more pedestrian-friendly and have nearby amenities so that residents are more likely to walk the short distances to use them. With the cost of fuel, it is also important to focus on making it easy for residents to not have to use their cars; mixed use spaces can help people work closer to home and better public transit can help people save money by allowing them to leave their cars at home when they do need to travel farther afield.
Keep an eye on the exciting new neighbourhood developments in the works for the already-amazing city of Calgary.
