The decision by the Islington Council to encourage a record number of people residing in the borough to swap their cars for bikes in addition to a cash reward will go down as one of finest moves to encourage road decongestion, support the campaigns for a greener and safer environment and help people save costs in the face of an increasingly devastating credit crunch.
The offer of £200 to those who agree to ditch their four wheels and take to riding two wheels, therefore, is most commendable. More importantly, it comes at the right time.
Sometime back there were reports of hundreds of people in the UK switching to biking. Although this was at a time the full devastation of the credit crisis had not been revealed, many people thought it was a wise decision to enable them reduce expenses and be able to manage their finances. The benefits, it was found, was immense and highly rewarding.
In the same vein moves to further encourage people take decisions like this kept coming from governments at various levels. One of such moves was the recent decision to allow motorbikes to use the bus lanes along with bicycles and black taxis in London. Despite the protests from cycling groups against the bus lane waiver, Mayor of London Boris Johnson went ahead with the scheme and said it was going to be a trial for 18 months, following which it would be reviewed.
After that came the news that bike routes were considered between London and Paris, to enable people from both countries explore the beauty of long-distance biking. Even as the proposed routes were described as potentially safe, concerns for safety were, nonetheless, raised.
Victory for environmentalists
While gas-guzzlers are getting all the penalties that would discourage acts that would further put our planet Earth in trouble, increase global warming and potentially put human species at serious risks, any policy, especially from authorities, would be considered a major victory for environmental campaigners.
CO2 emission is continuously drawing attention, globally, and policymakers are being blamed for not doing much to reduce it. Islington’s move boldly sets precedence. Thus, the response by up to 120 drivers’ to the call will result in an estimated 116 tonnes of CO2 emissions cut each year, according to experts.
Insurance cover
As more people accept the “£200 to pedal” offer it would mean further cut in earth pollution and a safer and greener environment for us all. But one thing we must accept is the fact that biking has its own risks, which could be really disturbing too. Among the risks are thefts, accidents and damage etc.
Being very proactive by preventing any of the risks or taking steps to provide a fallback in the event of their occurrence could really help new bikers or cyclist take full advantage of the numerous benefits.
