Blood is an essential part of many life forms on this planet, but still many basic facts about our blood are not widely taught at school. Many of us aren’t aware of the importance of learning the blood types, despite the increasing need for blood transfusion nowadays. In the first issue of the article “Science Simplified – Blood types”, we would like to tell you something about blood types (as known as blood groups) in a fun, informative, yet easy to comprehend way. By the way, don’t forget to vote for your blood type in the poll at the end of this article!
You might have learned about these blood types things when you are younger, like in secondary school. You know that you can be blood type A, or B, or AB or even O. In order to know more about these blood types, you should be familiar with a medical terminology, that is inherited antigen. It is the substance that can be either present or absent from the surface of your red blood cells. So we can simply say that the antigen is what defines your blood type. If you are type A, you got antigen A; if you are type B, you got antigen B but not so on because if you are type AB doesn’t mean that you got antigen named AB; in fact, it means you got both antigen A and antigen B. And if you are type O, you got no antigens (you are still human, so don’t fret about it.)
Along with antigen, another medical terminology needs your concern, that is the antibody. So what exactly is the antibody? You got antigen, and now? Antibody, as its name might confuse you, produced in the blood to fight disease, or as a reaction when certain substances are put into the body. Just like antigen, antibody has its own type. Look at the picture below:
Now you can pretty much figure out if you got antibodies at all. If you are type A, you got antibody-B; if you are type B, you got antibody-A; if you are type AB, you got no antibody (you ARE human, don’t fret!); and if you are type O, you got both, ah. But how can this be important to know? These things come in handy in term of transfusion. Transfusion is the process of putting new blood into the body of a person or an animal. Basically, doctors will just handle these things for you, but get to know another thing about yourself doesn’t hurt, does it?
Again, simply speaking, antibody is there to anti the type that goes into your body. Compare the picture above with the table below:

So, if you are type A, don’t ever think of giving your blood to your dears if they are type B or type O, even if you love them so much. Because you can easily see for yourself that type B and type O both have antibody-A which shall cause fatal damage to your dears’ blood cells when antigen A is transfused into them.
We bet that you now have a clearer understadning of blood types (or blood groups), and how they exactly work inside our bodies. But hey, we don’t mean that this is the end of issue one. Because we shall give you some pretty funny information about yourself, according to your blood types:

Type A: You are conservative and patient. You are the one who want everything to be perfect. However, you are self conscious about yourself and a little stubborn when things don’t work out.
Famous people with type A: George H. W. Bush, Ayumi Hamasaki, Britney Spears, Adolf Hitler, Jet Li.

Type B: You are creative and optimistic. You want to work alone in most cases, and you have a decent mind. However, you are sometimes irresponsible if you think that something is not worth doing, and some people might hate you because of your self-centered behaviour.
Famous people with type B: Paul McCartney, Leonardo DiCaprio, Vince Young.

Type AB: You are cool, rational and empathic. You make friends rather faster than others. However, there are times when you are indecisive and critical.
Famous people with type AB: John F. Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe, Thomas Edison, Bob Sapp, Miyavi, Jackie Chan.

Type O: You are, well, ambitious, and self-confident. And you are athletic too! You are however arrogant, insensitive and ruthless sometimes.
Famous people with type O: Ronald Reagan, Queen Elizabeth, Elvis Presley, Gerald Ford, Crystal Kay.
