May have dropped push rod from fuel pump inside engine. What should I do and how?
Replacing engine-mounted lift pump on my 98 Dodge Ram 2500 pick-up, and when removed pump, the push rod was no longer in it! So been trying to use mirrors, magnets, and now even removing oil pan and about to jack up engine, just to see if can find it in there. Is there any place it could’ve fallen on to in there? Is it worth all this hassle to look? I’m about to rent an engine lift to allow me to get pan off after lifting engine, but am running out of patience and really need this truck to be running for my family. Any thoughts? I’ve already searched everywhere around truck and under hood, no push rod to be found. Think it really did fall inside.
The engine is a 5.9 L in line 6 Cummings Diesel. I know the push rod exists because saw it protruding out of old pump but couldn’t pull it out cuz bracket from fuel resevoir warmer was in the way.
Remove spark plugs and put a long socket on the crank- by hand turn the engine over slowly-keep looking for the rod to show up. If it binds.STOP, This should rotate the rod back up…
If you cant locate it- Dont start the engine until you do- You could seriously damage the engine.
